  WEEKLY UPDATES:

Things that make you go hmmm…

A couple of the Maintenance guys and I were sitting around talking about stuff that goes on in the Park.  One of them said that they were called out to a site with an apparent water leak.  When they got there they found that the spigot had been left on and water was running down the site onto the road.  They asked me to check and see when the owner had last been into the Park.  I did.  The last recorded visit was months ago.  We all knew that the water hadn’t been running that long or someone would have discovered it.  So what happened?  As best as we could tell, someone must have deliberately turned the water on.  But why?  Hmmm…

How about another example…

One of our members called and complained that she didn’t have any electricity.  One of your Rangers investigated.  He found that the breaker switch to her site out on the street had flipped.  He explained the cause of the outage to the member and asked her to check and see what electrical appliances were on.  She said that she’d been at work all day and that there were no electrical appliances on.  The Ranger suggested that when the water heater and the refrigerator happened to turn on at the same time, the start-up amperage draw might be enough to overload the circuit.   She said she had a gas hot water heater and the refrigerator was a brand new, super-efficient one.  She wondered aloud whether these switches just magically flipped by themselves or had she inadvertently angered someone in the neighborhood.  The Ranger told her that sometimes an older breaker switch will weaken and just flip, but it wasn’t the case with this one – it was brand new.   And it probably wasn’t an angry neighbor either.  This little lady couldn’t possibly upset anyone.  So what happened?  We never found out.  Hmmm…

To change the subject, the Maintenance guys hacked down the stump and bush that obstructed the sight distance at the base of the Domino hill where it intersects with Roberts right across from the compactor at Storage Lot #3.  This intersection was something of a problem because you couldn’t see cars coming from your left as you were coming down the hill toward the Yield sign.  Although we’ve never had an accident there in recent memory, it was a potential problem and people often complained about it.  Let us know if the change has improved things for you.  If it hasn’t, maybe we need to put a Stop sign there instead of just a Yield sign.  We’ll keep you posted.  And speaking of the Maintenance guys (again)…

Do you folks realize how good our Maintenance guys really are?  Many of you take them for granted and it’s easy to do because, when a water line breaks or an electrical problem occurs, they just show up and fix the problem.  Most of you members never knew a problem existed.  Most of you members never see them up to their knees in icy water to dig a hole to get at a broken water line or laying on their backs in the snow trying to get at a leak underneath a trailer or kneeling in the pouring rain trying to fix a faulty breaker box unless it happens to be on your site – but I do. I see them do this stuff all the time and I’m always amazed at how cheerfully they go about their work no matter how grubby or disgusting it is.  We Rangers really appreciate their help and we hope that you folks do, too.  And how about the ladies on the Housekeeping crew…

I’m also amazed at how clean the Comfort Stations are.  This is a camping club and we live in less than ideal circumstances but some folks, a very few folks, seem to take their bad hygiene to even greater heights.  But he Housekeeping crew just clean up messes and keep things neat and clean and every one of them (the people not the stations) is a delight to work with.  If we get a call that there’s a mess in one of the Comfort Stations, they respond immediately and cheerfully.  We’re lucky to have them here in Port Susan.

If you have any concerns or questions, just email us at Rangercorner@gmail.com or stop by and chat.

Ranger response time

      Some of you have asked why it sometimes takes so long for us to respond to a request for assistance. A couple of things affect our response time.

~~~First is distance. When we’re in the back of the park, we always seem to get calls from the front of the park and vice versa — Murphy’s Law.
For example, if we’re patrolling on Poplar and we get a call for a site near the main gate it takes at least ten minutes to get there.
~~~Second is level of danger.

We may not be as quick to respond to requests for assistance on power outages or stray dogs as we are for potentially life threatening situations.

~~~And finally, we might be busy doing other things which may be more important for the safety and well being of the park and its members at the time than your request.      ...... Be patient, work with us and we’ll be there for you!
SPEED LIMIT -- PLEASE SLOW DOWN
The speed limit in the park is 15 mph (all gravel roads are 5 mph, this includes the road to the Burn Pit).  At the present time there seems to be an alarmingly high number of speeders in the Park.  Kids/families are in the Park and we need to slow it down. The Rangers are enforcing this.
Remember that the school buses will begin rolling again and the daylight hours are getting shorter.  Please drive slowly and watch for the kids!
Gate Card Misuse
      Again, some of you may not know (although you should by now) that it’s against the rules to let someone else use your gate card, even if it’s a relative.  We can understand a husband or wife using the other one’s card when they’re using the other one’s vehicle.
     People tend to keep their gate card in the vehicle they use most often and spouses often swap cars. But, when the gate card monitor shows Mrs. So-and-So carding in and we look up to find that Mrs. So-and-So has a beard and mustache, it’s pretty clear that she’s not the one using the card especially when we saw her the day before and she was clean shaven.
     Oh, it’s OK if she’s a passenger in the car and her hairy son is chauffeuring her around but hairy son can’t use his mother’s card on his own.  Same rule applies to a daughter letting her boyfriend use her gate card. That’s a no-no. Gate cards are issued to an individual and only that individual may use them.
New Guidelines for Winterizing
Winterize 2011
What’s the first thing to do?
What’s the first thing to do if your trailer catches on fire?
What’s the first thing to do if you or your spouse is having a heart attack?
What’s the first thing to do if you or your spouse is having a stroke?
What’s the first thing to do if you or your spouse has fallen and can’t get up?
 The answer to all of those questions is, Call your Rangers!
PLEASE DON’T CALL 911!
Bottom line on all this is, if you have an emergency,
please call your Rangers, not 911
EMERGENCY CENTER
The FAMILY CENTER is now set up as the an Emergency Center for the Park.  In case of a power outage or other emergency, the Center now has a generator for light and the big fireplace for heat.  CLUB 50 is the other Emergency Center and it also has light and heat.  In the event of a power outage, contact the Ranger Station.
MOSS CONTROL
The Tulalip Tribal Forester has approved Saint Gabriel Organic Moss Killer to kill moss.  This is the only moss killer that has been approved for use in Port Susan Camping Club.  Saint Gabriel Moss Killer is made from plant oils.  It safely removes moss build-up on brick, slate, concrete, wood and more.  Look for it at the Port Susan Store.
